Why does it Matter?

Active learning increases learning. When kids are offered a space to be creative through hands-on expression, they are learning vital life skills like communication and emotional expression. By encouraging reflection through art, kids learn to think intentionally about their reactions instead of responding to their first emotional impulse. This is especially useful when examining social scripts which are often unconsciously absorbed and not necessarily conducive to a positive perception of self or community. By reflecting on their own story, kids see that their actions, thoughts, and feelings matter and can be harnessed to create something beautiful. Education through art is a vital part of the learning process, and it is important to embrace in school and extracurricular context. The ReStory project highlights arts integration with environmentally conscious creation, encouraging kids to value the materials they have around them, while also reflecting on their environment by creating art about the things they see around them.
